Don’t bumble your CV with buzzwords
December 6, 2012
Are you a motivated, creative, hardworking professional with effective analytical skills who can act responsibly and blah blah blah? Let’s face it – when it comes to people’s CVs – so is everyone.
Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not to say that nobody will believe you, but if millions of other people are using the same buzzwords that you are, are you going to be noticed when your CV is on a recruiter or hiring manager’s desk?
LinkedIn, which other than being a great networking tool is a multifunctional online CV, publishes its top 10 overused professional buzzwords every year, looking at worldwide stats on their 187 million-strong user base, and it sheds some light on the clichéd terms that appear on people’s profiles.
The top buzzwords across a selection of countries are:
- Creative (the most overused buzzword in the US)
- Extensive Experience
- Problem Solving
- Track Record
So, when you’re putting together your CV (or your LinkedIn profile!) try to avoid using the words above. However, if you feel a bit restricted and use a couple, make sure you explain include some meaningful, real-life examples of you demonstrating your buzz word.
